Despair to Destiny:
The Story

Last February, my family and I were thrust into a deeply distressing and violating experience that shook the foundations of our lives. The shock was unlike anything I had known. What followed would unravel my sense of safety, open a well of grief and rage, and bring me face to face with wounds far deeper than I could have imagined.

The experience became a painful reflection of a much deeper cultural wound. Women have been degraded, diminished, violated, and dehumanized for centuries. Our bodies, our voices, and our sacred nature have been disrespected and defiled by a culture that has too often sought to control rather than honor us. This is not new. It is a wound that has persisted across generations, for thousands of years.

The weeks and months that followed were some of the hardest of my life. But in the midst of that despair, something unexpected became my medicine.

Every morning, I woke with grief sitting on my chest. I would sit at my altar, cry, sip my tea, and pray. Then I would open a pile of magazines and books and begin cutting and collaging images.

There was no plan. I only needed to give my anguish a voice and my anxiety somewhere to go.

Slowly, the prints began to emerge. Image by image, they became a visual language for what I couldn’t yet say in words. They held my grief, my fear, my rage, my questions, and gradually, something deeper began to reveal itself.

What began as an act of survival became a practice of listening. And in the silence between despair and creation, I discovered that something within me was still alive. Still dreaming. Still reaching toward destiny.

These prints have become a way of metabolizing this horrendous experience through art. A way not only to make sense of my own experience, but to give form to the grief, rage, longing, and resilience held within the collective experience of women. What began as a deeply personal act of survival has become an invitation to explore something universal.

These prints are reflections of the soul. What appears to be outside of us may awaken something that has been waiting within us all along. They are mirrors, doorways, and provocations. Images through which something ancient and intimate may stir, evoking a memory, a place, a desire, a grief without a name, or a longing that has been waiting patiently beneath the surface.

They are invitations into remembering.

Be surprised. Let the image enter the body before the mind rushes to interpret it. Notice what softens, what contracts, what warms, what aches, what wants to move. There may be a story beneath the story. There may be a truth waiting to be witnessed, a part of yourself waiting to be reclaimed, a destiny waiting to emerge from beneath the despair.

As we meet these forgotten parts with curiosity and care, we begin to gather the pieces of our own story and discover the direction they are pointing us toward. Something within us finds its way.

For me, despair became a point of discovery, a place where I began to recognize the unique path that is truly mine. Through this work, I found a way to transform anguish into expression, silence into voice, and despair into possibility. A reminder that even in the face of profound violation, something within us remains capable of creating, dreaming, and reaching toward a different future.

These prints hold more than my reflections. They invite each viewer to encounter something personal and hidden within themselves, allowing forgotten memories, longings, and desires to surface and awaken what may have been quietly waiting to come alive. As we begin to gather the pieces of our own story and discover the direction they are pointing. The waters deepen and the reflection shifts. Something within us finds its way home.

They are, ultimately, a gift from Despair to Destiny, and a reflection of the soul.
