Find Your Wild Inner Voice from Wild Contemplation: Journal of Embodiment
“The way to maintain one’s connection to the wild is to ask yourself what it is that you want.
This is the sorting of the seed from the dirt. One of the most important discriminations we can make
in this matter is the difference between things that beckon to us and things that call from our souls.”
—CLARISSA PINKOLA ESTES
Go to a comfortable spot in nature and feel your feet firmly in the earth. Begin with 3 full bellied deep breaths sending your breath down and out through the soles of your feet. Focusing your attention inward, notice a place within your body that asks for your attention. It could be an ache, a pain, or congestion of energy. Whatever draws your attention. Then begin to wander into nature until something gets your awareness that resonates with that specific body part. It may in some way support that body part or offer you information about it.
Enter into a non-verbal relationship with that natural object, animal or environment. Take it in with your breath, attune with it, move with it and come into its’ resonance. Take it in with all of your senses. Focus your awareness on the area within your body that wants your attention.
Verbally introduce yourself such as “hello elbow”. Come into dialogue speaking out loud. A continuous dialogue spoken out loud. Ask questions, speak out loud the answers you receive. Find the voice behind the symptom. Speak from that part of your body.
Journal your experience. What is different in your body now than when you started? What awareness came through? Can you infuse the information you received through a gesture, movement or word?

Wild Contemplation: An Invitation for Resonance
We are all an inherent aspect of nature; it is a part of our life, a part of who we are. Yet we’re rapidly losing touch with the fact that we are animals like all other living creatures. Part of a rich diversity of plants, animals, insects, fungi, rocks, and water. A symphony of aromas, sights, textures, sounds, and flavors.
Can you have a feeling for a tree? Look at it. See the majesty it contains, listen to the sound it makes, smell its vanilla bark, and feel it’s prickly edges. Or be sensitive to a little plant, the weed that’s creeping up the wall, catching sunlight light that’s dancing on its leaves. When we fully embrace the natural world with all our senses, we deeply feel that we are members of a community of living, thriving beings.
Many of us are so caught up in our theaters of work, problems, plans and desires, that we stop only briefly to gaze at the moon, commenting on its reflected beauty. But what happens when you watch it with new eyes as if you’ve never seen it before. Drink in the stillness of the night sky allowing the wonder to percolate throughout your body. Experience it with the freshness of the very first time.
Come into resonance with nature, a communion. Not a verbal description, but with awareness and deep curiosity to feel your presence and place. Flood your body with a sensual experience. Let go of the habit to simply name something “beautiful” then moving on to the next attraction. Allow your senses to fill you with the extraordinary beauty of the natural world.
